SPRINGFIELD Freedom Credit Union celebrates their 100-year anniversary in July. For President and CEO Glenn Welch, the milestone marks a time for reflection on the enterprises growth and to look ahead at new developments.
It is a pretty incredible achievementWithout the community, we wouldnt exist, said Welch in an interview with Reminder Publishing.
Freedom Credit Union initially opened in 1922 as the Western Massachusetts Telephone Workers Credit Union. The enterprise originally operated in an office space on Worthington Street before moving their central office to Main Street in 1978.
Over the years, Freedom Credit Union endured several expansions. In 2001, the credit union expanded its membership from telecommunications industry employees to anyone who lives or works in the Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin or Berkshire counties. After opening several branches throughout Western Mass., Freedom Credit Union started establishing their presence in the Hartford and Tolland counties of Connecticut, according to Welch.
You always want to get services out to people, said Welch. The enterprise also welcomed several mergers, including a 2019 union with West Springfield Federal Credit Union.

Freedom Credit Union Announces Free Fall Community Shred Days
SPRINGFIELD Freedom Credit Union is again offering the opportunity for Western Mass. residents to securely purge unwanted paperwork. In cooperation with PROSHRED Springfield, Freedom is offering free Community Shred Days on two Saturdays, Sept. 10 and Oct. 15, at its Ludlow, Chicopee, Northampton, and Greenfield branches.
On Sept. 10, shredding will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at 645 Center St., Ludlow, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 1976 Memorial Dr., Chicopee. On Oct. 15, shredding will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at 226 King St., Northampton, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 74 Main St., Greenfield.
The public is invited to bring old bills, bank statements, tax returns, and other sensitive documents for quick, secure on-site shredding. Credit union members and non-members alike may bring up to five file boxes or paper bags per vehicle to the events. There is no charge for this service.
Freedom Credit Union To Support Food Insecurity With Donation Drive
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. In honor of Freedom Credit Unions 100th year, the 100 Days Summer Food Drive is being held to raise donations on behalf of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.
22News spoke with President and CEO of Freedom Credit Union, Glenn Welch on why the Freedom Credit Union chose the food drive as the main community support this year, we have year after year supported the organization, we just thought that was a great thing to focus on for a 100 days because there is a real need out there.

The donation drive has returned each year but is bigger than ever due to this time of supply chain disruptions and inflation. Freedom Credit Union has teamed up with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts to supply people of the community with food.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is in the process of opening another facility after their Hatfield locations food space has been limited. Welch shared his thought on how this new food bank will benefit the valley, I think more and more people are struggling to get food or to get enough food, their budget may not allow them to buy all facets of the foods they usually would.
