Average Amenities In Smaller

Everything about the rooms has a middle-of-the-road feel, from the non-cutting-edge electronics to the beds that are firm and comfortable but not pillow-topped and luxurious. And the drab color scheme — yellow, brown, and plum — does nothing to make the room more enticing. The 52-year-old hotel renovates rooms gradually , and it really comes down to luck of the draw when staying here.

Most rooms have city views, though those on higher floors have bay or Golden Gate Bridge views. Standard rooms, located on the fifth through 21st floors, feel cramped with one king-size bed or two double beds in a 300-square-foot space.

All rooms feature flat-screen TVs, alarm clock/radios with iPod connector cables , and Cuisinart coffeemakers with free coffee packets and tea bags. Work desks come with ergonomic chairs .

Bathrooms are small, with shower/tub combos and Peter Thomas Roth toiletries.

Not all rooms have safes, but free safe deposit boxes — accessible 24 hours a day — are available at the front desk. Rollaway beds are charged per night and can fit in a standard room with a king-size bed. Cribs are free.

Adjacent To The Tenderloin But Two Blocks From Shopping

Hilton San Francisco Union Square

Hilton San Francisco, which takes up an entire block on O’Farrell Street between Taylor and Mason, is two short blocks southwest of Union Square, an area famous for its couture shops and not much else. Home to enormous outposts of Niketown, Saks, Tiffany, Macy’s, Louis Vuitton, and Neiman Marcus, among others, Union Square is to San Francisco what Fifth Avenue is to New York and Rodeo Drive is to L.A. Locals don’t hang out here, but the square is great for people-watching nonetheless, and occasionally plays host to small festivals and demonstrations. Other business hotels abound in the Financial District, a 10-minute walk from Union Square. Despite the hotel’s name, the Hilton San Francisco Union Square is actually on the edge of the Tenderloin, a somewhat sketchy part of town.

Large And Impersonal This Hilton Is A Busy Business Hotel

With 1,907 rooms and 134,500 square feet of meeting space, including nine ballrooms, this Hilton is the quintessential business mega-hotel. The business services are indeed impressive: the business center can print posters and deliver them to your meeting room and there’s an office to help with PowerPoint presentations. But leisure travelers may feel crowded out. Even at 10 p.m., throngs of people fill the lobby. At any time of day or night, guests wait in line at the front desk and concierge station.

In recent years, the hotel has made impressive upgrades to many of its rooms, meeting spaces, and common areas, including a complete lobby renovation in 2015. Rooms in Tower 3 are a notch above the rather basic rooms elsewhere on-site, and rooms in Tower 2 rooms are undergoing renovations until early 2017.

Parking & Public Transit

SF parking is expensive, and the parking here is in line with other Union Square Hotels. They have a large parking garage near Tower 3.

The cost to park on your own per day is around $67. You can have your car valet parked for about $80 per day. They have both secured and covered parking.

TIP: Unless you drive outside the city, there is no reason to rent a car. Public transit is excellent in this part of town. You can also easily find a cab, which will cost you less. You can also rent a car for the day if you need to drive outside the city.

The BART station and the cable car turnaround are only about three blocks away. Both will take you to many places in the city.

You can also pick up a variety of buses and street cars on Market Street, which is only about three blocks away.

Third Tower And Renovations

From 19851988, the hotel was completely rebuilt at a cost of $150 million, to designs by architect John Carl Warnecke, with the addition of a 26-story 348 ft third tower, connecting the two original towers, and rehabilitation of the first five levels of the Hilton Plaza. Tabler’s original checkerboard facade was removed and replaced with a more contemporary post-modern facade to match the new wing.

Between 2011 and 2017, the hotel underwent a $130 million overhaul, including noise-canceling windows and doors in guest rooms. The renovation was finished in 2017, with updates in Tower Two. It is the largest hotel on the West Coast.

Opening And Unique Design

Hilton San Francisco Union Square in San Francisco, CA

The hotel opened on May 25, 1964, as the San Francisco Hilton. Built at a cost of $29 million and designed by noted architect William B. Tabler, the innovative 18-story, 1200-room structure was known as a motel within a hotel due to a design featuring a series of ramps in the middle of the building, allowing guests to drive their cars directly to seven of the hotel’s lower floors and park adjacent to their room. Tabler’s design also employed a checkerboard facade of windows and decorative panels to disguise the building’s earthquake bracing. It was the 60th Hilton hotel in the company’s worldwide operations.

The Beatles stayed at the San Francisco Hilton during their 1964 US tour, opening their tour at San Francisco on August 18 after staying the night before at the Hilton Hotel.

The San Francisco Hilton’s distinctive parking layout is memorably featured in the 1968 film Petulia, filmed in part at the hotel.

by Jill Loeffler

I recently had the chance to get an insider’s look at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. Here is a recap of my visit and what you can expect during your stay.

The first thing you will notice when you step inside this four-star Hilton hotel is its enormous size. The hotel offers more than 1,900 rooms, so this place is buzzing all day.

The hotel is at 333 O’Farrell Street, about three blocks from Union Square. Its central location and convenient access to public transportation make it a favorite of both business and leisure travelers.

You will find various places to eat, drink, and relax in the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. Here are all the options:

Cityscape Lounge: This is my favorite spot and one you must check out. It’s their signature cocktail lounge on the 46th floor of the building and features some of the best views. You can see Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and most of downtown SF from the lounge. They also have a great selection of cocktails, wine, beer, and small plates. It is open from 4:30 until Midnight Sundays through Mondays, and 4:30 pm to 1 am Fridays and Saturdays.

Herb N’ Kitchen: You’ll find Herb N’ Kitchen near the hotel’s lobby. It’s a grab-and-go spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have gourmet salads, sandwiches, coffee, and cold beverages. You can also call down and ask for delivery to your room. It is open from 6:30 am to 10 pm Sundays through Mondays, and 6:30 am to 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays.

Poached: This is their breakfast spot for their hotel guests. They offer everything from breakfast staples to internationally inspired dishes. They are open weekdays from 6:30 am to 10:30 am and on weekends from 7 am to 11 am.

The Lobby Bar: This is where you can grab a quick drink or relax as you catch up with friends. It also offers a lot of space if you need to stretch out and get a little work done.

How to book a hotel?

Booking a hotel through Expedia makes the entire process easy. You can browse a wide variety of accommodation types and destinations, including popular spots like Toronto and Montreal. You can even implement search filters to narrow down your results based on amenities, star ratings, reviews and more.

What are the most important things when choosing a hotel?

Finding the right hotel means thinking about what you want for your vacation. If you’re looking for a bit of luxury, for example, you may want to filter for 4- and 5-star hotels.
