As a Bay Area native, I always try to stay in Union Square when heading into the city for a night.
So, when I decided to venture downtown recently, one property in particular fit the bill: the Grand Hyatt San Francisco.
Boasting a central location and walkability to two of my favorite spots, Market Street and Chinatown, this Hyatt outpost seemed like a convenient option for a quick stay. To my dismay, though, the Grand Hyatt felt far from grand.

A shell of its pre-pandemic self, the massive property lacked the grandeur I expected to find during my stay due, in part, to an odd lack of guests and mediocre service.
Still, with cash rates as low as $150 per night and the promise of additional perks stemming from my Globalist elite status, the hotel delivered some desirable benefits, especially for budget-conscious travelers. Heres what my two-night stay at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco was like.

The Grand Hyatt San Francisco is a skyscraper hotel located half a block north of Union Square in San Francisco, California. The 36-storey, 660 room 108 m tower was completed in 1972, as the Hyatt on Union Square and renamed the Grand Hyatt San Francisco in 1990.
The hotel had 402 employees before the COVID-19 pandemic, dropping to 28 as of April 2021, mainly due to cancelled conventions in the city. It was closed for around half of 2020, losing about $1 million per day during that time.
A Fresh Hotel With A Stylish Lobby Original Artwork And An Exclusive Lounge
The Hyatts 2013 renovation gives the hotel its chic public areas, with a lobby offering streamlined luxury in dark earth tones. The 32nd floor Grand Club Lounge, specifically for guests who book the accompanying rooms, offers comfortable modern furniture and an impressive view. The hotel also houses original, eye-catching installations from local artists like Mario Martinez and Ursula X Young. In lieu of standard desks, the lower level check-in utilizes kiosks and laptops reminiscent of a bank, with some guests commenting that the setup can be confusing.

Ideal location. Great hotel. Great room. Good gym at the 35th floor . Breakfast counter with Starbuck coffee. Standard internet is really reliable and streaming is easily possible. There is construction on the Union Square unfortunately… Only disagreement.More

location, cleanliness, comfortable beds, size of room
Andre helped me and my wife check in and I had mentioned we came for our 3 year anniversary. He congratulated us and helped us with a couple things to do the next day. We checked into our room and the elevator was really loud for our taste, we gave Andre a call at the front desk and he came up to our room to give us keys to a much better room. He definitely upgraded our rooms and gave us a nice quiet on the top floor with such a perfect view. We were really happy we were hoping he was working at the front desk the next day so we could personally thank him but he was not there. Valet was extremely fast and awesome!
Location was perfect. Room was clean and comfortable. Black out remote blinds were great. Staff was helpful

SarahDisappointed This hotel is in a great location. The hotel rooms seem very dated and the bathrooms have no counter space to get ready because the sink is too big. The showers have a hand sprayer instead of a big shower head making the shower just ok. There is a strike at the Marriott across the street making it very loud at times from 6am-10pm. The Hyatt tried their best to accommodate this. Overall, the hotel was ok because could use some improvements.
Ellen_and_PedroSmack in the middle of the actionThe location doesn’t get much better than where the Hyatt is, next to union square, close to restaurants, shop and anything your heart can desire. The room was as you would expect of a luxury hotel: spacious, clean, large tv, good shower, electronic blinds and a spacious closet. I was up to the 7th floor and didn’t hear many street noises, only in the background. Upon checkout, it appeared there was a mistake in my booking and they had expected me a day sooner . The staff was so kind to arrange things for me to get that night off the bill after I showed my paperwork. The only comment is about the breakfast. No complaints about the quality but it was incredibly expensive. A breakfast buffet is 34USD without tax and without tip. It came as a surprise to me and

How Guest Reviews Work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently theres no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didnt actually stay there. To edit a review youve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we’d publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we wont display any reviews that include or refer to :
- Politically sensitive comments
- Personal or sensitive info
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Impersonation
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
