Manatee Credit Union To Create Paths Toward Financial Freedom In The Area

Bringing a bank to Newtown has been in the city of Sarasotas plans for years, but making that vision a reality never seemed to be in the cards. But if everything goes according to plan over the next year or so, that could change.

While the addition of a physical bank in North Sarasota has yet to be agreed upon and is still a long way from happening, a recent partnership between the City of Sarasota and Manatee Community Federal Credit Union to bring a variety of financial services and programs to local residents who are unbanked, underbanked and underserved has led to optimism among some.

Were absolutely excited about this partnership, because one of the big things here in the community that can be lacking is financial services, said Rowena Elliott, redevelopment specialist for the City of Sarasota. It really comes down to helping the community develop a sustainable financial attitude, to save better, live better, and this partnership will help us do that. Weve been trying to get banks for many years to sit down and partner with us, have them come in and open some kind of brick-and-mortar bank and serve the surrounding community, but we have not been successful with that.

Steve Stancel, the citys economic development general manager, called the program a key piece of the citys strategic goal of expanding financial services within the north Sarasota community in a news release issued by the city Monday.

Manatee Community Fcu Expand Fom Through Partnership With Seiu

In March of 2019, Manatee Community Federal Credit Union, located in Bradenton, Fla., was approved for a field of membership expansion to include the states Service Employees International Union. The process took just around six months to complete, but it opened up membership to 54,000 new, potential members.

This is only the most recent FOM expansion for Manatee FCU. The credit union had experienced rapid growth after moving from a multiple common bond to a community charter as a low income designated Community Development Financial Institution almost 10 years ago, Sherod Halliburton, president/CEO of Manatee, said. Positioning ourselves as an institution that served almost exclusively the underserved for several years dramatically increased our diminishing membership.

This approach, however, would prove unsustainable after Manatees numerous attempts at securing a CDFI grant from the U.S. Treasury were unsuccessful. A large percentage of our new members and loans were coming from high-risk individuals, most of whom could not access traditional accounts and loans, Halliburton noted. We understood the risks that we were taking but always felt that surely our work in this space would be rewarded by a CDFI grant to ultimately mitigate our risk.
