State of the Union Season 2 premieres on SundanceTV on Monday, Jan. 14, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. You can stream the series on fuboTV, which offers a free trial.
This season follows a married couple who meet at a coffee shop every week before their marriage counseling sessions. The first season of the series premiered in 2019 with Chris ODowd and Rosamund Pike, who played a young couple in a similar crisis.
The new State of the Union season stars Brendan Gleeson and Patricia Clarkson, who play a couple who put their differences aside and meet at the coffee shop weekly with the help of a spunky barista played by Esco Jouley.
Stephen Frears returns to direct the series, written by Nick Hornby. Ten 10-minute episodes of Season 2 will air each weeknight at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
State Of The Union Review: A Brutal Tender And Perfectly Curated Portrayal Of Marriage
In a pub before marital therapy sessions, a couple unravel 15 years of familiarity, love and betrayal. The temptation to binge is terrible
That dimwit Shakespeare got it wrong, of course. Love totally alters when it alteration finds. Unless he was writing about robots, which would have been quite a feat in the 1600s and raised more questions than it answered.
In the new BBC series State of the Union , Tom and Louise , not robots, are aiming to find out just how much has altered between them by going to marital therapy together after 15 years of marriage and in the wake of the latters desultory affair. In fleeting episodes, each just 10 minutes long, we watch them meet up before every session in the same pub, with the same drinks dry white wine for her, pint of London Pride for him and talk. About everything, nothing and all points in between.
The couple are tender and rebarbative by turns. Voices occasionally reach a higher pitch but are never raised. They find conversational common ground then spin away from each other again, pick at scabs but fall gratefully on distraction often provided by covert watching through the pub window of the couple before them as they leave the therapists house across the street. Theyve just been given a right good counselling, says Tom mordantly as the grim-faced pair walk away.

Charting The Course For The Year Ahead
In her State of the Union address on 14 September 2022, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen outlined flagship initiatives which the Commission plans to undertake in the coming year. Many of them are made in response to recommendations citizens made through the Conference on the Future of Europe.
The initiatives among others include:
- Continuing to strongly support Ukraine and its people, including by mobilising the full power of the EUs Single Market
- Putting in place measures to support Europeans in weathering the energy crisis
- Supporting the business environment, particularly small and medium enterprises, to strengthen Europes future competitiveness

State Of The Union Review Brendan Gleeson And Patricia Clarkson Lift A Sticky Slovenly Script
At first, this marriage drama about a couple in therapy feels so contrived its hard to get through. But outstanding performances turn it into something far more endearing
I did not love the first season of State of the Union , which appeared back in 2019, though I did end up with a grudging respect and admiration for it. It followed Chris ODowd and Rosamund Pike as a married couple meeting in the pub before their weekly counselling sessions. It was and directed by Stephen Frears , and each episode, roughly 10 minutes long, featured theatrical verbal sparring about love, marriage and record collecting. It relied heavily on the strength of its two leads, and it was arch, literary and occasionally insufferable. By the end, I was invested in the relationship and was willing them to figure it out. Its brevity gave it a loose, stagey charm.
The second season moves the action to the US, to a coffee shop, where Brendan Gleeson and Patricia Clarkson await their therapists and try to make sense of a changing world. The most interesting choice is their age. Both are in their 60s, and have been married for more than 30 years. As in the first season, there have been affairs, but not recently enough for the wounds to feel raw. Instead, Ellen is thinking they should probably get divorced, while Scott is coasting, oblivious.

This Valentiness Day aptly marks the return of SundanceTVs Emmy-winning short-form series State of the Union, written and created by Nick Hornby and directed by Stephen Frears. In the first season three years ago, we followed Chris ODowd and Rosamund Pikes characters, Tom and Louise in the 10 minutes before their marriage counseling session . Season 2 uses the same approach with a new couple, Scott and Ellen, played by Brendan Gleeson and Patricia Clarkson. But Scott and Ellen have 30 years of marriage and baggage to contend with as they weigh the pros and cons of a potential divorce, and their sessions take place above a Connecticut hipster coffee shop, not across the street from a pretty empty U.K. pub.
The first season of State of the Union won the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series, with both ODowd and Pike taking the respective Actor and Actress awards in the same category. Expect similar recognition for Gleeson and Clarkson . While the second season lacks the immediate charm and humor of the first instead building slowly over the course of the 10 episodes there is no denying the power of Gleeson and Clarksons performances. And with a show like State of the Union, that is the key: Because 10 minutes can feel like an awfully long time when the performers arent as compelling as this duo.

I really liked the first season of this series. It reminded me of the Before Sunrise/Sunset films, where they could make the scenes entertaining with little to no action, only by the conversation. I only knew Chris O’Dowd from the IT Crowd. I had to disassociate him from the IT geek image in that show.It was good to see that the couple started counseling after Louise cheated on Tom. Maybe it is due to Tom’s artistic character that sometimes I felt as if he were too easy despite the cheating. This is definitely not something for background noise, you really need to listen and pay attention to…
