Union County Humane Society To Hold Fundraiser Saturday

By Nikki | on April 22, 2022

After the pandemic put a halt to its annual fundraising events over the past couple of years, the Union County Humane Society will be putting on the Fiesta at the Farm at Dorral Farm, 11101 Hinton Mill Road, Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is being held to raise money for the great work that is done for the animals at the UCHS.

Tickets to the event are $65 and can be purchased at www.uchspets.org and will include a dinner catered by Its About Thyme with a Mexican-style buffet menu. Included in the price will be appetizers, entrees, desserts and two drink tickets that patrons may use at the bar, which will also be available throughout the event.

DJ Rockin Lou Schocken will be playing music for the attendees and the party will include volunteer awards and community recognition.

In addition to the dinner, there will be silent auction, which includes such items as diamond earrings from Lambert Jewelers, a hot air balloon ride donated by Bob Scobee, various salon packages, OSU collectibles, a Yeti cooler donated by McAuliffes Ace Hardware, wine baskets, and much, much more. A raffle tickets for other prizes will also made available.

All proceeds benefit UCHS and will be used to care for the animals.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Why Rescue A Shelter Dog

Because shelter dogs are full of love!

Is it because they know you saved them and love you harder for it?

I can’t say for certain, but yes.

Jokes aside, there are three things all shelter dogs need to thrive in their new home:

Older shelter dogs, generally 1+ years old, may have experienced a lot of trauma, which often results in one of 8 common behavioral issues:

  • Leash reactivity & barrier-related aggression
  • Constant whining
  • These issues are correctable! Your dog isn’t broken, they’re just damaged. You can fix them with enough love, patience, and a good training plan.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, finding good dog trainers can be hard. Like everything else, dog training is moving only. but there are great online dog trainers that are proven to work and can help get your new pup on the right path.

Tips To Improve Your Adoption Experience

Adoption processes vary drastically from organization to organization, but here are some general tips that apply in most instances. Note that we’ll use the term “shelters” here for simplicity but it includes all types of rescue organizations.

  • See an animal online that you’d like to meet? Call the shelter before your visit to make sure the animal is still available. This especially applies for puppies, which are adopted out quickly.
  • Usually, you’ll need to get some paperwork in order: a photo ID, vaccination/medical records for any pets you currently have, possibly your vet’s contact info and a couple of personal references, and proof you’re allowed to have a pet .
  • If you need to provide contact info for your vet, let your vet know ahead of time. Otherwise, they may not release your information.
  • Many shelters require your current dogs to meet adoptive dogs. Your current dogs need to be up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Some shelters require you to schedule a home visit to ensure a suitable living environment for the new animal.
  • If you have any questions about adopting an animal feel free to contact the PetLists team!

Steffen Baldwins goal was to be a star on Animal Planet, by any means necessary, investigators say, even at the expense of animals, he had pledged to protect.

Now, the former chief humane agent for the Union County Humane Society is facing 42 criminal charges, including bribery, cruelty to companion animals and impersonating a peace officer. He appeared in court Wednesday to face those charges. A judge set a $200,000 cash surety bond.

Investigators say his alleged crimes date back years, but the case would never have come together without the help of the dog parents of Remington, known as Remi.

Angelo and Litsa Kargakos say they saved Remi from certain death in May of 2016 after he was deemed a dangerous dog. They took him in as they have other doomed dogs through their rescue organization, No Fear Rescue.

Within probably about a month, we realized what a good boy Remi was, and we wanted to give him the opportunity to have a normal life, Litsa Kargakos said.

Weeks earlier, the couple had reached out to a well-known local animal advocate known for being a dog whisperer, the two said. That man was Steffen Baldwin.

He originally was set to work with two other dogs from the rescue but then reportedly told the couple he could work with Remi, so the two-handed over Remi and $1,000.

Kargakos says thats when Baldwin contacted the two of them asking for a mediation session with an attorney to explain what happened.

The Kargakos family was there at the courthouse.
