You may not need them but what the hotel charges will include in/out privileges. Outside lots will not.
If SF is the middle of a road trip you may be stuck with the car but it’s worthwhile to at least price out turning in the car and re-renting.
We always park in the lot on the corner of O’Farrell & Mason. It happens to be just across the street from the Hilton. It’s very clean and safe. Never had an issue. It’s $32 per 24 hours.
Sal’s observation about in/out privileges is worth noting . You need to consider whether you’ll be using the car while in SF and if the answer is yes, how you expect to use it.
If you’re going to just park the car for your whole stay, then the savings with a daily rate at a different location could be real and significant .
If on the on the other hand you intend to use the car in the city , especially if it will involved leaving/returning to the garage multiple times a day, the non-hotel garage could certainly end up being more expensive than the $50 the hotel is charging.

You can see Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and most of downtown SF from the lounge. They also have a great selection of cocktails, wine, beer, and small plates. It is open from 4:30 until Midnight Sundays through Mondays, and 4:30 pm to 1 am Fridays and Saturdays.
Herb N’ Kitchen: You’ll find Herb N’ Kitchen near the hotel’s lobby. It’s a grab-and-go spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have gourmet salads, sandwiches, coffee, and cold beverages. You can also call down and ask for delivery to your room. It is open from 6:30 am to 10 pm Sundays through Mondays, and 6:30 am to 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays.
Poached: This is their breakfast spot for their hotel guests. They offer everything from breakfast staples to internationally inspired dishes. They are open weekdays from 6:30 am to 10:30 am and on weekends from 7 am to 11 am.

Overnight Parking Garage Near Union Square
Staying at a hotel on a weeknight but they charge outrageously for parking. I know there are many garages in the vicinity of union square and the SF Shopping Centre. Any suggestions on a good/safe/reasonable one ?
There is a public garage under Union Square, but it is not fun to get into it because of the traffic. Others…within a couple of blocks…the Ellis-O’Farrell Garage is one. On Mason Street there are three on Mason Street within two blocks of the Square….sorry, I do not know their names…one at O’Farrell and Mason, one next to the Donatello Hotel a block further up Mason before Post, and one halfway up that block, after Post, across from the JW Marriott. Then the Sutter-Stockton Garage two blocks up from Union Square. These are all safe. I am guessing that their rates are $29.95 plus tax which brings it to about $35. That’s what we pay, but we may get a rate when we stay at the Chancellor. It is the garage they use.
What hotel are you using? Check to see if they have a Parking Package when you are there. We often get in on one of those, where parking is included.
There’s some sort of website that shows rates at different garages, but I’d confirm those rates with the actual lots to be sure.
I park at Sutter/Stockton all the time and have never had a problem. While I understand why it may attract thieves , I think if people keep everything in their vehicle out of sight it shouldn’t be an issue.
Just be smart and you’ll be safe.
